About us

Objectives

The main objectives of Club for UNESCO of Piraeus & Islands are:

– To promote International Understanding, according to the principles and ideals of UNESCO, and to direct the interest of common opinion towards the objectives of this organization.

– Το promote the constitution of Study Groups and International Relations Groups that are directly related to the aforementioned objectives of UNESCO and to create a Culture of Peace.

– To organize Community (EU), National or Regional Programs of informal Continuous Vocational Training, Education, and tackling of unemployment addressed to citizens, to the Repatriated, to the Unemployed and to Emigrants.

– To contribute to the Scientific, Environmental / Ecological and cultural training of its members, helping them mainly to adapt to the constant developments and changes of any kind in all sectors of social life, and above all to work towards creating a “Culture of PEACE”, which is a basic good of humankind.

– To seek to consolidate Free Exchange of Scientific and Cultural data, up to the Free trade of educational and cultural ideas and initiatives, to preserve, save, promote and protect Popular Culture and to develop Peace, Friendship and mutual collaboration and understanding between the people that serve the Popular tradition of each country in an amateur or scientific way.

Activities

Club for UNESCO of Piraeus & Islands has been founded at 1998, at Nikea, st. Petrou Ralli 210 & Thiseos 1, at the region of Piraeus. Club for UNESCO of Piraeus and Islands is a private body non profit and non governmental organization, aiming to foster intercultural awareness, understanding, cooperation and solidarity according to the principles and ideals of UNESCO.

Club for UNESCO of Piraeus & Islands is managed by an eleven-member Board of Directors, the members of which are volunteers and has more than 2,000 members.

The activities of the Club are summarized in four key-areas:

a) Cultural Activities

Management of international & local cultural festivals and international meetings with a view to fostering intercultural understanding according to the principles and ideals of the global organization of UNESCO. Implementation of exchange programs of students from other countries to develop peace, friendship and mutual cooperation. Organizing events for new and / or known artists, art exhibitions, book presentations. Supporting theatrical dance and artistic performances. Tributes to folk art and tradition. Events with a view to reduce prejudices and to enhance intercultural dialogue among cultures.

b)Educational Activities
Organization of courses, seminars, workshops and conferences to provide information, awareness and training of young people on issues relating to current social issues (work, employment, volunteering, environment, culture, social events), open to the public. Our members can attend language courses, dance, drama, music, visual arts, cutting sewing, gymnastics and Greek language to foreigners courses provided by volunteer teachers. Management of general educational training programs and restoration of unemployment, non-formal learning programs for young people to promote active participation and European citizenship. Organization of activities for the conservation, preservation and dissemination of Greek heritage.

c) Social Activities

Establishment and management of permanent SOCIAL STRUCTURES AS FOR THE IMMEDIATE DEALING WITH POVERTY in cooperation with the Municipality of Keratsini-Drapetsona, the Municipality of Perama, the Municipality of Piraeus, the Municipality of Korinthos and the Municipality of Nikea – Renti. The established structures consist of SOCIAL MARKET, SOCIAL RESTAURANT, BUREAU OF CONSULTING, OPEN CENTER FOR HANGING AROUND, TIME BANK, SOCIAL DORMITORY, SOCIAL PHARMACY, SOCIAL DENTIST’S and SOCIAL GARDEN. Furthermore, the Club, giving great importance in the children’s smiling and the basic children’s needs, has created—inside the Structures fighting the poverty—special building sectors such as playroom, children’s library, children’s wardrobe and children’s creativity room. All the above structures are modern and the most well-structured in Europe. Our structures have been manned with skilled scientific and assisting staffs, who serves dozens of poor families—the majority of them have 3 and more children—that really need our support on daily basis for 2 years’ time by providing them with food, clothing, medicines without prescription and also stuff of basic needs.

d) Environmental Activities

We organize excursions, trips, workshops and conferences of environmental content on sustainable development and alternative energy sources. Actions to mobilize schools and groups of citizens for cleaning, recycling and conservation of natural resources, with a view to adapting them to incessant and all kinds of developments and changes presented continuously in all areas of social life. Information, support, and reward young people who apply innovative ideas on environmental issues.
